Join us for an insightful one-hour CLE program as we delve into the historical and legal significance of Juneteenth in the context of Indiana's heritage. This program will provide a comprehensive overview of pivotal moments and legal frameworks that shaped the African American experience in Indiana, focusing on key events, cases, and constitutional provisions.
The presentation is led by Attorney Dakota Slaughter, from Bose McKinney & Evans. It begins with an exploration of the Northwest Ordinance and the 1816 Indiana Constitution, shedding light on their impact on the establishment of fundamental rights and principles, and their implications for the African American community within the state.
Dakota will delve into landmark legal cases such as the Polly Strong Case and the Mary Clark Case, which challenged the institutions of slavery and indentured servitude in Indiana, respectively. Through these cases, he will analyze the legal struggles and triumphs that contributed to shaping Indiana's legal landscape and advancing civil rights.
Furthermore, Dakota’s presentation will examine the historical presence of Black Americans within Indiana, exploring their contributions, challenges, and resilience in the face of adversity. This will feature some Indiana Supreme Court cases, and ultimately a new state constitution.
Finally, Dakota’s presentation will culminate in an examination of Article 1 Section 37 of Indiana's present constitution, addressing its relevance to contemporary discussions on equality, justice, and the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
